Mortlake Pottery (UK) Arts & Crafts large vase, turquoise glaze, signed & dated George James Cox 1912
Sold
Elegant large ovoid shape vase with short fine neck, showing potters marks particularly on the inside in the best Arts & Crafts tradition, glazed in a rich muddy-turquoise toned celadon glaze with subtle vertical streaking, a rainbow iridescence visible with cross-light.
Well marked with large incised ‘MORTLAK’ (sic) , a ‘✝’, monogram ‘GJC’ for Gerge James Cox, and the date 1912.
34cm high
Excellent Condition. An interesting feature is the missing ‘E’ at the end of the Mortlake mark.
Designed and made by G. J. Cox at the Mortlake Pottery, south London.
Cox was an accomplished Arts & Crafts potter, who made several experiments with high-temperature glazes. This vase shows his fascination with Chinese ceramics, in both the simple form and the monotone glaze.
The interior is particularly lovely, showing the hands of the potter.
