Fine early miniature bone chess set, each piece of two-part construction, finely and crisply turned with slender baluster stems and stepped bases, the kings and queens with pronounced tiered collars, knights carved in simple profile with naïve incised mane, all retaining a soft honeyed patina consistent with age and handling, contained within a folding wooden board inlaid and painted with a chequered playing surface.
White pieces carved from bovine bone (not marine ivory).
Board with surface wear, shrinkage cracks and patination consistent with use.
Circa 1800–1820.
