$480.00 AUD

Early Victorian Old Sheffield Plate tray , on three scroll feet, the rim with scrollwork and flowers, the surface with finely engraved flowers around a central Solid Silver ‘plug’ (for engraving a crest).
Large Globe & Cross mark,
for Walker, Knowles & Co, Sheffield,
also small workman’s mark ‘E.A’
Circa 1840

36cm wide

Excellent condition, some minor copper blush to the moulding & around incised work, displays very well & very usable.

Walker Knowles & Co used this exact ‘orb and cross’ mark – a variation of which is also seen used by other makers. They began production in the last years of Old Sheffield Plate manufacturing, entering this mark in 1836. Within a few years, Electroplating was developed and led to the extinction of Old Sheffield Plate techniques in favor of the much easier electroplating methods. This tray is made by the old methods – with stamped silver/copper/silver body & filled silver moulding around the rim – but has interesting cast alloy feet with a thin silver surface – a very early electroplating ?
