Robin Hill was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1932. He trained in Melbourne, at the National Gallery Art School and later RMIT. His early career as an artist included wildlife documentaries for the ABC. In 1971 he moved to the US, where he was commissioned to paint a series of illustrations of American birds.
The 1967 book this was used in ,Australian Birds , had an initial print run of 10,000 copies – which sold out straight away…. a re-print was rushed into production, and it is still regarded as ‘the most comprehensive treatment of its subject to date’.
