References | These vases represent the last flowering of Chelsea, just before Duesbury of Derby took the firm over. Their wonderful white body was not so white anymore, and these examples show just how opaque it had become. The claret ground was always tricky, and has mis-fired on these examples. The gilt birds, which have been reserved into this ground by leaving a white patch, are finely tooled, and show the sense of drama in decoration the factory was so rightly famous for. Duesbury of Derby purchased the Chelsea works in 1769, and they most probably date to this transitional period, before the factory was finally closed in 1784. |
