Pair of Old Sheffield candlesticks, canoe-shaped, Watson, Fenton & Bradbury c. 1795
$850.00 AUD
Elegant pair of Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks, the canoe-shape base with tall oval column tapering out to support an urn-shaped sconce.
Attributed to Watson & Bradbury.
Circa 1795
30cm high, base 17cm
Signs of some sympathetic re-silvering, with some copper still showing through. Very usable.
ref. Frederick Bradbury’s ‘Old Sheffield Plate’ (1912) p445 for the Watson, Fenton & Bradbury mark (the name ‘Watson’ and a 3-masted sailing ship).
The type is documented by Bradbury on p.227, where he illustrates an example of the same basic shape, without the extra protrusion at the base of the stem & the lines up the shaft this example shows. This he attributes to Watson & Bradbury, 1795 – the example shown being in his own collection, and the product of Thomas Bradbury, an ancestor of his.
