Pearlware waste bowl with underglaze blue dragon, Liverpool, C.1790
Small Pearlware bowl, painted with a ‘Hidden Dragon’ pattern after the Chinese original, the tail and two feet of the Dragon wrapped around the outside, continuing into the inside with the head and front feet, with various symbols including clouds & the ‘flaming pearl’.
Attributed to Liverpool,
10cm wide, 4.7cm high
small chips to rim
The Quality of the potting, the deep blue cobalt, and the style of the painting all compares favourably with Liverpool Pearlware products. There were many potteries in Liverpool in the 18th century, and some of these proceeded to make porcelain as well – and this Chinese-inspired pattern appears on various Liverpool porcelain makers wares, almost identical.
