Fredrick B Bennett is an undocumented artist, which is surprising as he shows his skills in this sketch book. There is a Fredrick Bennett in the Melbourne art world. W.B. Bennett came to Melbourne in the gold rush years as a book seller and his son Frederick continued the business selling early manuscripts to the national gallery of Victoria, however no art by him is recorded. Other sketches by FBB attributed to the same Fredrick Bennett are all done in England, Switzerland and Austria, 1872-3 suggesting an artist traveling through on a Grand tour, it’s tempting to think this is the same .
