Pinxton coffee can, landscape probably by Cutts, c. 1810
Sold
Rare Pinxton coffee can, painted in enamels with a rural scene featuring a house & tall trees, probably by Cutts, within gilt line rims, the handle ear-shaped.
Unmarked, circa 1810
6cm high
Condition: 6x2cm section at front overpainted inside & out, concealing a crack which runs through the landscape to the foot. Older restoration, slightly yellowed, should be re-done. Otherwise excellent with little wear to gold.
Pinxton is one of the Rarer English porcelain makers, running 1796-1813. William Billingsley is the major force behind the firm, but the soft-paste body used was too susceptible to warping in the kiln, and the firm was ultimately a failure. It’s now keenly sought after, and often has an identical decoration to contemporary competitors such as Spode – but some small details allow a firm attribution, one being a distinct look to the porcelain body, the other on this coffee can being the distinct ear-shape handle with long ‘kick’ at base.
