Sold
Pair of remarkable Australian Emu Eggs, superbly carved with four main panels and six smaller roundels, the larger being;
Heart of Australia / Advance Australia
Australia Years Ago / Australia Today
including Aboriginal figures and implements,
the smaller including two kookaburras, ‘O’possum’, ‘Lyre Bird’, Koala ‘Native Bear’, and the Melbourne cup winner ‘Marabou’,
the two main panels with a small heart shape deeper carving, one of a kangaroo and emu, the other a view of Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Set on a period blackwood stand custom made for them,
circa 1936
stand 28cm wide, 21cm high. Each egg 13×9.5cm
One excellent, the other with restored damages to the very top section
The family tradition for these pieces was that they were presented as a gift to a bank manager on the occasion of his move from Gippsland to Geelong.
The Sydney Harbour bridge is shown in its completed post-1932 form, and as the family moved circa 1936, a date of 1936 appears accurate. The horse ‘Marbou’ won the Melbourne Cup in November 1935, and so would have been ‘current news’.
