Rare Chelsea ‘Rivergods’ vase, wrythen moulded with blue lapis ground, c. 1760

Sold

Rare Chelsea vase & cover, the body decorated in mazarine blue glaze with gilt veins to simulate lapis lazuli, featuring two moulded ‘River Gods’ heads above large laurel wreaths, the wrythen moulded neck with rich gilt outlines and twin handles, the lid with further lapis reserving acanthus leaf moulding and a large artichoke knop, on a small spreading foot, the thick honey gilding superbly burnished and detailed.
Unmarked,
Gold Anchor period Chelsea,
circa 1760.

37cm high
Some restorations including to neck, one handle, narrowest point of stem, lid broken in 3 and restored.

The form is reminiscent of the French baroque style of the earlier 18th Century, rather than the rococo more often seen in Chelsea of this period, suggesting an earlier French origin copied by the Chelsea artists.
Provenance: old Melbourne, Australia, collection
