Rare Chinese Export scallop shell pickle dish, underglaze blue flowers, c. 1760

Sold

Rare Chinese Export pickle dish, of straight-fluted scallop shell form, painted in underglaze blue with central flowers, with curious lobed border . the outside with a finer border & cell-pattern to the handle.
Unmarked, fired on 5 stilts in a circle.
Circa 1760

9.5×10.5cm

Good condition, one minor bruise to rim & small areas of glaze wear to rim, displays beautifully.

This rare form copies an English example in form & decoration, but is different in both aspects. They were copied from an English example that would have been taken to China as a sample – and yet the Eglish themselves had previously copied a Chinese idea & pattern!
