References | Ref. Bradshaw 'Derby Figures' p178 - he illustrates one marked figure matching the 1770 ‘Figure List’ entry for No.14, ‘Sacrifice Figures Pair’, which he illustrates (below). It shows a youth with a goat, holding a knife to its neck while blood gushes out and collects in a basin at his feet... quite clearly a sacrifice! However, he goes on to say ‘The nature of the companion model is uncertain”. He refers to a note of a figure brought in to the Derby Museum which was incised ’14’, present whereaboutsunknown; it had ‘A girl holding a basket of flowers in her left hand and a bird in her right’. This indeed matches the example here, which is also incised ‘No.14’, alongwith ‘2sz’, meaning it is the 2nd size made. |
