Mary Sumner was the widow of silversmith William Sumner I. After he died, she took on the business herself, mainly making cutlery. She was probably active in 1806, registered the ‘MS’ mark in 1807, and went into partnership with her daughter Eliza in 1809, using the mark ‘MS/ES’. This fork comes from the brief period where she used her own initials, just 2 years.
