Rare Neale & Co ‘Portland Vase’ jug, rope handle & masks, c.1792

Sold

Unusual Neale & Co drybody jug, with fluted broad spout and rope twist handle, decorated with a large classical scene in greenish black clay after the ‘Portland Vase’ design, set on a rouletted ground with engine turned base, a bearded face beneath the spout and handle.
Unmarked,
circa 1792

14.5cm wide, 14cm high
Small crack inside spout

Ref. ‘Dry Bodies’ p162 for a vase with the same handles, and same applied sprigging.
The depiction of the ‘Portland Vase’ is rather different to the original Roman cameo glass original, which was in the possession of the 3rd Duke of Portland at the time, and had been lent to Wedgwood to make their famous copies…. the differences seen in this example, c.1792, suggest the mould maker worked from a print of the vase.
