Roman marble sarcophagus fragment, head of Apollo, 2nd-4th century AD
Roman marble fragment from a sarcophagus or cinerarium, carved with the head of a man, his hair parted in the center and probably representing the god Apollo, with a scallop shell reserve radiating above. 2nd-4th century AD.
Provenance: Acquired by a member of the German diplomatic service in Istanbul, Ankara and Thessaloniki in the 1920s and 1930s. Thence to Australia & by descent.
