Russian plate, after the Kremlin Service, C. 1900

Russian dessert plate, richly decorated in gold & enamels after the famous Kremlin Service, made for Csar Nicholas I 1837-8, with the Russian double headed eagle surrounded by the inscription NICHOLAS THE EMPEROR AND RULER OF ALL THE RUSSIANS, within a series of enamelled flower and leaf borders on a gold ground. Unmarked, Circa 1900.

The Kremlin Service was commissioned by Csar Nicholas I for the re-furbished Kremlin in 1837-8, and made at the Imperial Factory. The design is taken from a Kremlin treasure, the coronation plate for Czar Alexei Mikhailovich (1645-76), and the original is still held in the Kremlin.
