Saint Cloud snuff box, modelled as a reclining water buffalo, with details picked out in brown and black, having blue eyes and red mouth, the lid with colourful chinoiserie decoration to either face, the outside with a seated figure, the interior with a garden in Kakiemon colours.

Silver hallmarks for Paris,

fox head discharge for 1738-44,

Circa 1740.


ref. Lahaussois, Porcelain de Saint Cloud, #362 for a cat with the same coat details, 381 for the same polychrome figure on the lid. The interior chinoiserie is more usual on tea wares, ie #184.
