Samson of Paris ormolu mounted vase & cover, in the Chinese manner, c.1880

Chinese style blue ground vase and cover, the baluster form with powder blue & gilt ground reserved with large panels of flowers in Famille Vert colours, mounted on an ormolu base with paw feet.

Mock-Chinese censor mark in underglaze blue,

also red characters including ‘S’ type as used by Sampson of Paris,

Circa 1880

Excellent condition, minor wear to gilt ground

33cm high

A very impressive piece, sold by Christies Australia as 'late 18th or early 19th century Chinese'. Once the ormolu mounts are taken off there is no doubt that it is not Chinese but a superb example of the highest quality Sampson production of the later 19th century. He is recorded as making ormolu mounts in his Paris workshop, and this is most probably his work as well.
