Scottish slipware ‘Mottoware’ sugar-sifter in the form of an 18th century baluster-shape tea canister,  Scotch Thistle knop to the silver plate lid, inscribed ‘Sugar, ye may gang faurer an fare waur’ – translated: ‘You may go further and do a lot worse‘.

Lid hallmarked ‘JS & S’ forJoseph Sankey and Sons, Staffordshire

Inscribed to base ‘Cumnock ‘, for the Scottish pottery near Glasgow of the same name,
