This remarkable part service is a rare survivor, with plates like this usually split-up and sold individually as ‘cabinet plates’. However, these were services to use at this date, and there is the occasional knife mark to the enamels to attest this.
The style of decoration is reminiscent of the earlier 19th century, with very similar ‘basket of flowers’ decoration appearing on the desirable Welsh ceramics of Swansea and Nantgarw. Interestingly, some of these Welsh pieces have been decorated in London decorating studios- and whoever painted these may well have recieved their training in such a place in the previous decades.
Key to the comparison is the baskets themselves: the brown paint has been brushed on, then the brush reversed and the end used to ‘scratch out’ the details.
