Sevres small cup & saucer, roses en camaieu, 1758-9
$950.00 AUD
Sevres pate tendre cup & saucer of the smallest size, superbly painted in puce en camaieu with a rose tendril meander over a branch bound with gilt ribbon, the rim with a dentil border.
Marks: crossed ‘L’s’ with;
cup – ‘F’ for 1759, ‘p’ for the painter Dominique Joffroy, active 1754-70
saucer – ‘e’ for 1758, ‘o’ for the painter Jean-Jacques Sioux ‘le jeune’, active 1752-60
saucer 10cm, cup 4.2cm high
small flaws to saucer rim with very slight touch-up to gold in affected areas, cup has original production specks to glaze
The different date codes suggest a late-1758 production for the saucer, the cup being added in the New Year of 1759 – not an uncommon occurrence when an order for an extensive service could take several months to fulfil.
There is good documentation for the artists responsible –
for the ‘p’ painters mark, see Peters ‘Decorator and Date marks’ 2019 p51.
for the ‘o’ painters mark, see same p76, also Erikson ‘Sevres Porcelain’ p170 no. 162 for the ‘unconfirmed attribution’.
