The Farewell
Large watercolour,
showing a Captain taking leave from his family in an oak-lined room, the windows opening onto a harbour on which lies his waiting ship, a young boy enthusiastically waving out the open window.
Signed lower right, Shaw Crompton,
circa 1890
A companion piece to this watercolour was offered at Bonhams Knightsbridge, 23 October 2021. Titled ‘Welcome home’, it shows the Captain setting foot on the steps of a landing spot, with a lady in white rushing to meet him: they are very similar to the farewelling couple seen in this image….
