References

The statue of Simpson and his Donkey commemorates the Australian spirit of self-sacrifice in war. It depicts the heroic work of stretcher-bearer John Simpson Kirkpatrick, who with his donkey, Duffy, rescued wounded soldiers at Gallipoli under heavy enemy fire. The main sculpture was installed in 1988 at the Sculpture Gardens of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, and 12 1/10th models were also cast, of which this is one.
