The family firm of AE Williams is still making quality Pewter in England. Originating in Bristol in 1779, they used a Griffin as their touch-mark – seen here as the first of the smaller marks. The next small mark is 3 stars, indicating the 3rd generation’s work. The large mark is actually borrowed from the earlier 18th century, being the branch bearing both the Tudor Rose and the Scotch Thistle, apparently being the symbol of Queen Anne (reigned 1702-07). The company moved to Birmingham by the time this was made in the 19th century, and found a good market for these traditional goods in Scotland.
