This red stone is unique to Cornwall, and in particular the foot of the ‘Lizard’, the most south-westernly point of England. While specimens had been collected for centuries, it was after a visit by Queen Victorian & Albert in 1846 that popularity grew. They ordered a fireplace and vase plinths for Osbourne House, and by the 1851 exhibition a large amount of ornamental stone pieces were on display. The Lighthouses were a favourite, souvenirs of the wonderful Cornish coastline.
