Staffordshire figure, ‘Dick Turpin on Black Bess’, c. 1860
$295.00 AUD
Stylish Staffordshire figure of the flamboyant highwayman Dick Turpin, shown in high fashion including top-hat, yellow cravat, and blue overcoat, mounted in his fabled steed ‘Black Bess’, who wears a colourful ‘blanket’, on an oval plinth base.
Circa 1860
24cm high
Restorations include a break restuck at base of backing pillar & thru lower legs; his head also cleanly broken & re-stuck. Enamels in excellent condition, displays very well.
The black on this piece is unusual, being an underglaze pigment, resulting in a very glossy appearance. The usual black on Staffordshire figures is an on-glaze enamel, as are all the other colours on this piece except for the deep glossy blue.
Ref. Harding book2, fig. 960 for this exact figure.
