Staffordshire group of a courting couple, ‘Romeo & Juliette’ c. 1860
Sold
Staffordshire group ‘Romeo and Juliette’, showing a courting couple seated in an arbour of arching branches, sparsely decorated.
Circa 1860
22cm high, 14cm wide
good condition with minor loss to enamels.
ref. Harding vol1. fig.1076 for the model, with more colour.
ref. Harding vol.1 fig 1200 for the same main group, inscribed ‘RIVAL’ to the front, but with the jealous ‘rival’ appearing to the left spying on the couple.
By leaving out this side figure, it could be used as a ‘Romeo & Juliette’ group, although Harding notes it has also been identified as Jessica and Lorenzo in Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’.
