Staffordshire pottery bust, John Lock, late 19th century

$380.00 AUD

Staffordshire bust of scientist / philosopher John Locke, naturalistically coloured wearing a purple tunic, set on a high circular sockle with multi-coloured ‘marbling’.

Inscribed to the back ‘LOCKE’
probably by Kent,
late 19th/ earlier 20th century

19cm high

Good condition with minor signs of age, a faint hairline visible to back near mark.

The style of marbling on the base suggests a Kent attribution: they obtained a number of classic earlier 19th century figure moulds & began replicating earlier pieces in the 1890’s, products which are often confused with earlier versions.
There is there mains of a BADA decal, used in Australia to import ‘antique’ ie over 100 year old pieces in without duty; however, this was introduced in the 1930’s and discontinued in the 1970’s. As the piece was made circa 1890 at the earliest, no matter when it was imported, it was NOT 100 years old, and good example of the confusion in collecting these pieces (pre-research & reference books on the subject) in the 20th century!
