Sterling Silver ‘berry spoon’, Exeter 1794 & later
$285.00 AUD
Sterling Silver ‘berry spoon’, the hand with bright-cut borders & flowerheads, the bowl embellished with fruit & leaves, probably a Victorian creation.
Hallmarked for Exeter 1794,
also ‘JH’ apparently for Jason Holt, Exeter, active 1758-84
21cm
44.3g
This interesting berry spoon appears to be a Georgian example at first glance, with a probable Victorian ‘beautification’ to the bowl – not uncommon. However, the hallmarks are unusual, showing an Exeter mark with a maker – Jason Holt – that is not consistent with the date letter. Holt finished in 1784, this spoon was made 1794. It is probable the entire spoon is a late Victorian mock-up of a desirable earlier Georgian piece.
