Superb quality French electric table lamp, by Gagneau, c. 1900

Superb quality French brass electric table lamp, in the Neo-Classical manner with tall faceted column supporting an urn from which comes the fitting support bearing twin light sockets, decorated with bands of acanthus, bellflower and bows, with four rams heads to the junction.
Inscribed ‘Gagneau & Cie’, c. 1900

Provenance: said to belong to Princess ‘Ena’, (Victoria Eugenie Julia Ena of Battenberg) who was living at Kensington Palace in the early 20th century. It was apparently sourced from her apartment on occasion of her marrying King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1906, when she moved to Spain to become Queen. It was a prized possession of Mr Glover of Geelong, Australia, purchased during his time living in London.

Gagneau of Paris began in the early 19th century as a premium metal workshop, and by the time of the invention of electricity in the late 19th century was one of the best in France. He won numerous medals in the Great Exhibition of 1851, Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855, and was part of the jury for the 1889 Paris Exhibition. Embracing the ‘hi-tech’ buzz of electric lights (ie Paris lit the world’s first street lights in 1878) the company produced superb quality hi-tech light fittings and table lamps throughout the early 20th century, making them some of the earliest electrical commercial products available… still very functional 100 years later, and beautiful as well!
