These superb heavy-cast baskets have the appearance – and hallmark style – of early 18th century Dutch silver. They also bear the mark of Samuel Boyce Landeck, a London silversmith well-known for importing Continental silver, assaying it as Sterling with his hallmark and the Sterling lion. You can see the evidence of the assay – testing of the silver quality – with an area of ‘scraping’ to the bases, where a sample has been taken.
They are an example of an interesting period in the history of collecting; the Victorians became fascinated with 17th/18th century Dutch silver, the ‘Golden Age’ of the craft, and there was huge demand for examples in the latter 19th century. As prices rose due to demand, the Dutch silversmiths were happy to supply examples – such as this, a brand-new ‘Antique’ made for the English & Australian collectors! The quality is certainly comparable to the 18th century examples, and they make a fine display group.
