Rare Arts & Crafts pewter tea set, model # 231 designed by Archibald Knox while at the for Liberty & Co, London workshop, with stylish compressed globular forms with sharp central junction resting on twin sled-runner base, the handle terminals extended onto the body with elegant foliate raised moulding, the handle with original woven canework.

Excellent Condition, a natural pewter patination to the surface (could be cleaned to shine), handle is good, some minor losses when you look closely, but displays well.
A fabulous example of the master of design, Archibald Knox’s work. The body design is a complete break with the Victorian era’s concept of a ‘teapot’ shape, and the decoration a blend of the Continental Art Nouveau and Knox’s British Celtic heritage inspiration. A rare survivor, with cane handle intact.
W.H. Haseler of Birmingham, a firm of manufacturing goldsmiths and jewellers, manufactured the ‘Tudric’ range. The firm had formed a partnership with Liberty’s in May 1901 to manufacture the ‘Cymric’ range of silver and jewellery, which Liberty had launched in 1899. They also made the slightly less expensive ‘Tudric’ pewter products.
Archibald Knox worked at the for Liberty & Co, London workshop from 1898-1912, during which time he produced around 400 designs in his distinct style. This teaset bears the low model number 231 , and is a well-documented example of Knox design. It was in the possession of a Geelong family since around WWI time, so possibly since new – and was always associated with a tray of a different design, bearing model no. 42. This may well have been a retailer’s matching-up of two complementary products, and they do go together very well.
