Unusual chicken-form green glass & enameled decanter, Sterling Silver base London 1886
$680.00 AUD
Unusual Victorian enameled green-glass decanter in the form of a chicken, realistically enameled and mounted on an English Sterling Silver base hallmarked for Cornelius Joshua Vander, London 1886.
Possibly Moser of Carlsbad,
circa 1875
Height: 21cm
Condition: Restoration to the interior lip & comb of stopper; silver mounting probably later, perhaps added for stability or to cover a chip to the tip of the delicate legs.
Moser of Carlsbad made exotic middle-ages inspired rhytons and drinking vessels in animal forms, and was a master at enamel work – however, no similar example to this vessel could be found in the literature. It may be by one of the English manufacturers, with the silver mount being part of the original design.
Silversmith Cornelius Joshua Vander registered in 1886, but ceased production in 1903.
