Unusual Chinese Export blue + white plate, vegetable pattern, Qing Dynasty
$295.00 AUD
Unusual Chinese Export plate, painted underglaze with a central depiction of leafy ‘vegetables’ growing in a blue-washed plot of dirt, the rim with flowerhead on a fine foliage ground.
Qing Dynasty, 18th-earlier 19th century
23.5cm
Condition: rim chips restored & small area of overpainting; a lacquer has been sprayed over the whole at the same time, but translucency examination reveals no cracks or widespread restoration, just a few minor rim chips now covered over. Displays very well.
Provenance: from an old Sydney collection.
Few examples of this pattern evident in the Chinese Export literature, and dating not conclusive; the porcelain is finely potted, the foot rim very neat, which is at odds with the coarse nature of the decoration: usually these wares for Europe were much finer in their decoration. This may indicate they were for a different market, for example the Middle East.
