Vietnamese blue & white jar, bamboo panels, 15th – 16th century

Sold

Vietnamese octagonal jar with flat shoulder, straight sides and recessed base, well painted with panels of bamboo bordered by trellis panels, the neck with a typical lotus petal collar.

Circa 1500

10cm wide, 9cm high
very small chip to neck, otherwise good condition

Identical examples were discovered amongst the mostly Chinese porcelain found on the ‘Lena Shoal Wreck’, dated to circa 1490. Others of the same style were recovered from the c.1490 ‘Hoi An’ wreck of Vietnamese ceramics. This example shows no sign of the usual damage seawater does to glaze over 500 years, suggesting it is a burial piece instead.

ref. ‘The Lena Shoal Wreck’ p 193 & 194 for examples, and the Hoi An sale catalogue lots 511-516 for the 170 examples recovered & sold in LA in 2000.
