Vincenzo Loria (1850-1939) was an Italian artist of the late 19th/early 20th century. His works would have sold to the ‘Grand Tourists’ visiting, and most popular subjects reflect this:the Bay of Naples is prominent amongst his recorded output. Pompeii, however, seems to be scarce, with just a single example in the online auction records. This other examples is dated 1917, and comparable to our example for dating purposes.
He did provide watercolours which were reproduced in colour lithographs as part of the large ‘Le Case e i Monumenti di Pompei disegnati e descritti ‘, published from 1854-1896 as a series of volumes. His works appear in the last quarter of the 19th century, when he was in his 20’s-30’s. This work conforms to his works of the period.
