Very unusual Pokerwork playing card box with set of ‘Harlequin & Columbine’ French ‘Invicta’ cards by Grimaud, the lid with a book-illustration style image of a witch in tall hat, broom & black cat in hands against a large red sun disk; the sides & lid interior with a quirky image of a horned owl within a triangular reserve, on a poker stippled ground.
Unsigned,
c. 1910
Good condition with minor signs of age, cards are in excellent condition.
box 11x15cm; 4cm high
The card decks are datable to c. 1908-18 by several features to the earlier 20th century, pre-WWI. This includes the lithographic printing method, double-ended courts, and the presence of the ‘Joker’ along with the ‘Invicta’ marks.
