G & J Zair was founded in around 1837, listed as whip makers in Birmingham. They grew to be the largest & best in the industry.

John Zair went to Melbourne in 1880 to exhibit in the International Exhibition and assess the market for himself. He won first prize for his whips. The previous year he had done the same in Sydney. While there he learnt the benefits of kangaroo skin that was to become one of the firm’s most important leathers. The trade-mark of the kangaroo holding a whip was registered soon afterwards.
