Atlas supporting a shell, Limbach c.1775
Sold
Rare figure of Atlas supporting a shell, shown semi-clad on a rocky plinth, a large scallop shell on his shoulders serving as a sweetmeat dish. Crossed ‘L’ mark for Limbach, Circa 1775
Condition | slight restoration to rock base |
---|---|
Size | 28.5cm high |
References | The mark, crossed L's and a *, was a blatant copy of the Meissen mark of the Marcolini period, especially when combined with the obvious copying of Meissen shapes and styles. Meissen took the dramatic step of taking them to court in 1787, forcing them to cease using it. |
