‘MISERIS SUCCURRERE DISCO’ translates as “Not myself being unacquainted with difficulty, I learn to succour the distressed” – the motto of the Macmillan clan.
This belonged to Marian Macmillan, known locally as ‘Lady Marian Macmillan’.
