Corinthian Aryballos, Griffins & a Dove, 600-550 BC

Corinthian Pottery Aryballos, the spherical form decorated in a brown/black silhouetted ‘Black Figure’ frieze with scratched details, including a central Dove surrounded by Griffins, a ray border to the neck and ‘Z’ band to the rim, the rounded base with concentric circles.
Circa 600-550 BC

7.5cm high, 7cm wide
Good intact condition, with ancient staining & wear to glaze, no restoration

These curious vessels were oil containers, and therefore probably used by athletes and bathers at the gymnasium – a favourite pastime. The design allowed them to be suspended from the wrist by a small cord.
Provenance; from an old Australian collection, old collection label ‘AA-41’ (1941?)
