Derby figure, ‘Dresden Shepherd’ C. 1765
Derby figure of a ‘Dresden Shepherd’, shown as a dandy with a basket of fruit and flowers, dressed in flowery pants and colourful cloak, a dog at his feet, standing on a scrolled rococo base.
minor losses, no restoration.
This figure is illustrated in Bradshaw’s ‘Derby Porcelain Figures’ as one of the ‘Dresden Shepherds’ of the later type (ie 1770’s). This example, however, belongs to the earlier period, and the painting of the flowers on his pants are by a distinctive hand known as the ‘Cotton Stem’ painter.
