Early Staffordshire figure of St Paul, attr. Hall, c. 1825
$580.00 AUD
Early Staffordshire figure of St Paul, with open book and gesturing hand, before a leafy bocage, titled to the plinth ‘SAINT – PAUL’.
Attributed to Samuel Hall,
circa 1825
22cm
restored hand, losses to bocage
This figure and its partner St Peter closely conform to marked HALL examples, particularly a standing slightly smaller St John shown on Myrna Schkolne’s excellent website :
http://www.earlystaffordshirefigures.com/103-saints-matthew-mark-luke-and-john.html
The features that suggest a Hall attribution include the impressed title picked out in black, the red cloak with small black circle reserves, the colour palette (although these blues have mis-fired somewhat) , the same bocage leaf shapes being used (although others also used similar), the distinct rococo shell-scroll at his feet.
