Early Staffordshire Pearlware figure, ‘Fire’, circa 1795
Sold
English Pearlware figure of a classical lady in hooded robe, decorated with turquoise, blue, & brown enamels, her flesh coloured naturalistically, shown standing by an altar with flaming pot, probably representing the element ‘Fire’, on a low square plinth base with brown line.
Circa 1795
Old paper label beneath reads
“Neale of Hanly / Figure of the / element fire / Circa 1795”
20.5cm
A stress/firing flaw up each side of the plinth & into the figure, clearly visible on legs & pillar, small chip to veil edge, otherwise good.
While the date of 1795 on the old collector’s label beneath is accurate, the attribution to Neal & Co is not established through the modern literature; in Diana Edward’s ‘NEALE Pottery & Porcelain’ (1987) there are a range of verified Neale figures illustrated, and this figure is not included – it also has differences in the plinth & detailing.
There are several other possible makers at this time.
