English delft punch bowl, flower swags, attr. London circa 1785
Sold
English delft punch bowl, decorated inglaze inside & out with a flower swag pattern having a central flowerhead motif, the rims feathered, the interior with a flowering plant.
Probably London,
circa 1785
22.5cm wide, 9cm high
signs of overpainting to 3 rim cracks, possibly a break repair, heavily crazed
ref. V&A ‘Delftware’ p200 for several London examples of this pattern, although with a more naturalistic flower rather than the stylized flowerheads in this example. The date is surprisingly late, some of the ‘last flowering’ of English delft before it disappears; perhaps the firing issues in this example reflect a declining industry.
