At the time these were made, there are also a series of Sceaux porcelain wares decorated by the great artist Duvivier in camaïeu rose, in the style of Boucher, with putti in clouds. They are the inspiration for the design of these tinglaze wares, and their existence is the result of an interesting situation: Louis XIV forbade all manufacturers except his Royal factory of Sevres from using colour enamels – or gold – on porcelain. Sceaux was a tinglaze manufacturer who had only just begun to make colour decorated porcelain, so they were able to easily adapt their production to tinglaze earthenware pieces with fine colour decoration, such as this plate.
