Large Rare Japanese Arita porcelain figure of an actor, modelled standing in an alert manner with a quizzical expression, dressed in flowing robes with multi-layers each decorated in Imari colours of iron red underglaze blue, pale purple and watery turquoise, with gilt highlights, the outer robe with a fruiting vine and text motif, the inner with a prunus & leaf design, a wide obi sash to his waist and shoes just appearing from beneath the lower cloak.
Genroku period,
1688 – 1704

38.5cm.
toe with small repaired chip, otherwise good, minor wear and signs of age.

A series of these large-scale figures appear to depict the ‘ukiyo’ – the entertainers and courtesans to the upper classes. While most are female, including dancers and musicians, this man can be interpreted as an actor, especially considering the pose and expression shown.
