Japanese Shibayama ivory table screen, the removable panel with superb inlay in mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, serpentine, and lacquer scenes, one side with chickens & insects before a flowering peony plant, the other with a group of flowering plants & grass with a cicada in flight, the stand ornately carved with dragon supports to the sides, the lower base panel with a praying mantis & cricket to one side, magnolia flowering branch & butterfly to the other.
Meji period, 19th century
