John Meir and Son pottery ‘Willow Pattern’ serving dish, c. 1855

$295.00 AUD

Large oval pottery serving dish with deep sides and wide rim, decorated with a version of the ‘Willow’ pattern, the deep exterior walls with cut-out sections of the same pattern at a slightly smaller scale.
Marked ‘WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE’ scroll mark, initials below ‘J.M & S.’ for John Meir & Son, Greengates Pottery, Tunstall.
Circa 1855.

33.5×23.5cm, aprox. 6cm high cm

Excellent condition, three small circles inside are the ‘stilt marks’ from production, matching marks in glaze on the back.

This mark was used 1837-97, but ‘ENGLAND’ was added in 1890.
The speckling on the back only shows it was fired face-down, with some kiln soot settling on the back, leaving the front clear of flaws.
